Echeverias in Oz

The Original Story of Echeverias in Australia
Bev Spiller

Welcome to my world........the wonderful world of Echeverias. Currently the "in" plant of the millenium......... My "in" plant for over twenty five years.

Elegant.....smart and sexy.....who can resist the swish of frills on Petticoat and Crinoline, or the absolute arrogance of Zorro.

Big and Bold......cheeky, petite and shy...Echeverias have it all.

Much confusion reigns...names have "changed" over the last fifteen years, and there are "experts" everywhere. The photos on this site are some of the 450+ plants in my collection and aimed at providing a guide to what your plant with the same name looked like when it first arrived in Oz.

As Echeverias were in limited supply in Australia at the time, I imported most of my plants 1980/85 from reliable sources in U.S.A. including Highland Succulents and Wright's Nursery. Dick Wright was prominent in the cultivation of over forty-eight named hybrids, including the very beautiful Mauna Loa.

During this period of time, offsets were mainly only available in Oz, from serious Collectors. To these people, past and present I am eternally grateful for their friendship, advice and contributions to my being able to initially establish my collection.
Specialised collecting sneaks up on you. I started with Cacti and was sent a couple of Echeverias as substitutes for plants I had ordered..

I thought they were cute, but after a few more arrived, the cacti were demoted to the underbench and I started my long term 'love affair' with these plants.

Want "stress relief"? Grow some Echeverias. It can be relaxing and verrrrrrrrrrrry rewarding.
